RIF: Kindle eBook
The Burning Wire, Lincoln Rhyme book #9 by Jeffery Deaver (favorite series)

Lincoln Rhyme is back, on the trail of a killer whose weapon of choice cripples New York City with fear.

The weapon is invisible and omnipresent. Without it, modern society grinds to a halt. It is electricity. The killer harnesses and steers huge arc flashes with voltage so high and heat so searing that steel melts and his victims are set afire.

When the first explosion occurs in broad daylight, reducing a city bus to a pile of molten, shrapnel-riddled metal, officials fear terrorism. Rhyme, a world-class forensic criminologist known for his successful apprehension of the most devious criminals, is immediately tapped for the investigation. Long a quadriplegic, he assembles NYPD detective Amelia Sachs and officer Ron Pulaski as his eyes, ears and legs on crime sites, and FBI agent Fred Dellray as his undercover man on the street. As the attacks continue across the city at a sickening pace, and terrifying demand letters begin appearing, the team works desperately against time and with maddeningly little forensic evidence to try to find the killer. Or is it killers . . . ?

Meanwhile, Rhyme is consulting on another high-profile investigation in Mexico with a most coveted quarry in his crosshairs: the hired killer known as the Watchmaker, one of the few criminals to have eluded Rhyme’s net.

Juggling two massive investigations against a cruel ticking clock takes a toll on Rhyme’s health. Soon Rhyme is fighting on yet another front – and his determination to work despite his physical limitations threatens to drive away his closest allies when he needs them most . . .

One hardcopy edition of Damaged by Pamela Callow

Must have a US or Canadian physical mailing address. No POBs please

One entry per person. Just leave a comment letting me know you’d like to be entered in the giveaway.

How far are you willing to go to forget your past?
Haunted by the death of her sister, and wounded by her ex-fiance’s accusations, Kate Lange throws herself into her new career at a high-powered law firm.

When the grandmother of a lonely private school student seeks her counsel, Kate thinks it’s just another custody case. Until the teen is brutally murdered. And it isn’t only Kate who wonders if her legal advice led to the girl’s death.

How far are you willing to go to redeem yourself?
Put on notice by Randall Barrett, the firm’s charismatic managing partner, Kate must fight for her career, for her reputation — and for redemption.

Unwilling to live with the damage she has caused, Kate pursues the case on her own and unearths some chilling facts.

Facts that lead straight to the heart of a legal conspiracy.

Facts that lead Kate directly into the surgically-skilled hands of the Body Butcher.

Kate is my everywoman superwoman. Damaged will be released by MIRA Books in June 2010. The next book in the series, Indefensible, will come out in January 2011. The third, Tattooed, is planned for the summer of 2011, and the fourth in June 2012.

What I’ve known for a while now is official … I’m certifiably crazy. Last week I started a new venture with Jennifer from The Literate Housewife Review for book bloggers called Book Blogging Blues. A gathering place for those us with major ARC and other assorted reading and book blogging issues. And this year I’d promised myself to cut way back on review books which I’ve been handling quite well thank you very much. Then a wonderful author M.J. Rose offered me a copy of her newest release The Hypnotist after spotting my mention of it in my May wish list post. As I have Kindle (which I love!) I requested a pdf file so that she could pass along the offered print edition to another book blogger. Lo and behold she had someone who works on her publicity team direct me to this absolutely wonderful gem of a site, NetGalley.

Read A Fanatics Book Blog fantastic NetGalley post to learn more.

Talk about love at first site. OMGosh!! This very possibly could, today or some day, be ARC heaven. If you as a book blogger/reviewer don’t know about NetGalley you just might be missing the next big thing in ARCs. I know I shouldn’t be telling you this if you’re a member of Book Blogging Blues but I can’t help myself. I couldn’t get to the sign up page fast enough.

I did practice restraint and only requested The Hypnotist and one additional book. But when I’ve worked my way through the 6 review books sitting on my shelf right now I’ll be back for more. If you’re headed to BEA some NetGalley folks will be there so stop and say Hi to them.

** Hint for Kindle owners: on the profile page when entering your Kindle’s email address use all lowercase even though Amazon shows the @Kindle.com with a uppercase K. I couldn’t get it to take my Kindle email addy today and had to contact Lindsay NetGalley’s super wonderful customer service person. **

So I went and blogged about how I’d be headed that way this year. Big mistake! All those sayings about making plans have come into play. There was the knee surgery in January and then our 14-year old house decided this year it wanted some curb appeal – a coat of new paint, a new patio and patio furniture, major backyard renovation. As you can see below my hubby has done a fabulous job with his honey-do list. Pretty soon the money sucking machine had kicked in with a vengeance. Oh well no BEA this year for me but just maybe next year. And if I don’t really make plans then you just might see me at BEA 2011.

Jennifer & Kathy – if you’re headed to BEA and see some really juicy historical fiction please remember me when you’re picking through the books. I’ll be more than happy to pay postage.

The idea behind Book Blogging Blues was inspired by a friend and fellow book blogger who was starting to spiral into a very deep and dark funk because reading, and blogging, was becoming a job instead of a pleasure.

Having suffered through the same funk myself over the past year I could empathize and sympathize with her. From the responses she got to an email she sent out asking for help she realized that many of us are feeling the effects of living in a virtual book world. We’ve decided to try and fill a niche for our treasured friends so we started Book Blogging Blues.

A Denver serial killer has killed four beautiful young women, leaving a bridal veil at each crime scene, and he’s picking up his pace. Unable to crack the case, Raines appeals for help from a most unusual source: residents of the Center for Wellness and Intelligence, a private psychiatric institution for mentally ill individuals whose are extraordinarily gifted.

It’s there that he meets Paradise, a young woman who witnessed her father murder her family and barely escaped his hand. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, Paradise may also have an extrasensory gift: the ability to experience the final moments of a person’s life when she touches the dead body.

In a desperate attempt to find the killer, Raines enlists Paradise’s help. In an effort to win her trust, he befriends this strange young woman and begins to see in her qualities that most ‘sane people’ sorely lack. Gradually, he starts to question whether sanity resides outside the hospital walls…or inside.

As the Bride Collector picks up the pace-and volume-of his gruesome crucifixions, the case becomes even more personal to Raines when his friend and colleague, a beautiful young forensic psychologist, becomes the Bride Collector’s next target.

The FBI believes that the killer plans to murder seven women. Can Paradise help before it’s too late?

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

If you’re new to Mailbox Monday welcome! Thank you to everyone who stops by Mailbox Monday. Whether you comment or visit I appreciate your taking the time to drop in.

***
As you can see no books for me this week. Don’t be surprised if my mailbox is fairly empty this year as I’ve cut way back on requesting/receiving books and my Kindle is holding about a gazillion eBooks so I’m not buying much right now either. But don’t stay away as there are plenty of other overflowing mailbox posts to visit.

***

What books came into your house last week? You have the choice of using inlinkz or Mr. Linky. With inlinkz you can include a book cover if you’d like along with the link to your Mailbox Monday post (clicking on the image takes you to the blog post.) Duplicate links will not count toward the fundraising efforts.

Don’t forget to fill out either inlinkz or Mister Linky or leave a comment with a list of books if you don’t blog. If you’re interested in Read It Forward you will need to leave a comment in addition to filling out a link feature.

In the “Your name:” box, please enter either your name or your blog’s name.

In the “Your URL:” box please enter the URL/link that will lead directly to the post you are submitting (also called the permalink). This is not the URL to the blog’s home page.

It all started with a book cover. Beautiful book cover art. As most of you know I’m a sucker for beautiful book cover art. So when I saw both these beautiful covers and book descriptions just different enough to lead me to believe that it really was two different books I ordered both books or the same book twice. But that little voice in my head kept nagging at me repeating over and over ‘same book, same book’. Of course I should have listened to voice in my head but I didn’t. Something about hindsight ringing bells here? What book could possibly lead me down the wrong path? The Red Lotus by Pai Kit Fai otherwise known here in the United States as The Concubine’s Daughter. I ordered The Red Lotus from The Book Depository months ago so when my package from across the pond arrived in my mailbox today I was all kinds of excited. And yeah that excitement lasted all of about 30 seconds. Just long enough for me to read the back cover book blurb and see the name Ben Devereaux. Ah **** (the ear blistering I mentioned in my writeup of The Botticelli Secret). So now I have a book with a beautiful cover that I’ve already read and loved. As my library system has copies of The Concubine’s Daughter I’m offering my copy of The Red Lotus to a reader. Just leave a comment at this post and I’ll choose a name at week’s end.

In 1906 Southern China, newborn Li-Xia (Li) is nearly murdered by her elderly father because she is a girl, only to be saved by the specter of a fox fairy. Li lives in a rice shed mostly forgotten, as she wonders about her dead mother, who had been an educated concubine. After Li rebels against attempts to bind her feet, she is sold on her eighth birthday to a silk merchant and finds a temporary family among the female laborers while she dreams of learning to read and write. Capt. Benjamin Jean-Paul Devereaux rescues her by buying her freedom and safe passage on his ship, and she is able to fulfill her dream of literacy. They marry, defying societal norms, but in Hong Kong, Li is assaulted by an enemy of her husband, and fearing for her newborn girl, Siu-Sing, she has the child taken to safety in the mountains. Siu-Sing learns about her lineage and returns to face her own tribulations as WWII is about to begin. Fai’s multigenerational tale has predictable elements, but is nonetheless an engaging and entertaining read.
